it was a hell of two weeks since after Easter, and i only managed to breathe properly tonight. haha. well well well, what can i say, fantastic weather everyday! its sunny, cool, breezy and niceee. even with all the work, i feel good everyday! no stress, no frustration, no anger, just RELAX. :)
had my very first presentation in uni last thursday (i knoww right, yes it's my first official presentation not counting tutorial presentations, don't be surprise) on a service firm that we have to audit for our Service Relationship Marketing (SRM) assignment. i dun want to go into details about our pre-presentation work but all i can say is it wasnt at all that smooth sailing. but yea! thank God all was well in the end! :) no need for formal wear because quote Browyn our tutor, 'Australia is a relax country, so no need to wear formal, just appropriate' :)
/sidetracking in process i never notice this until i was back for holidays and i think it was renee? whoever, we were talking about school and she was like Prof. ___ said blah blah, i was like Prof. ___? she said it was her tutor and i was like, you call your tutor Prof. ___ or Doc. ___ (whichever the degree is)? was very surprised by the title one have to add in addressing their tutors or lecturers.
i was telling her we address our tutors or lecturers by their first name, like POONAM (this OB tutor from India, a very nice lady, and renee cannot stop laughing at her name i duno why haha), BROWYN (my current SRM tutor who cannot control not to share her experience at a jazz club today after a group's presentation on a Gay Club) and Augstin (my Supply Chain Management tutor who was telling us about his marathon last friday, on how he had to abseil down this really steep slope and have people rolling down the slope beside him as he went down, haha).
the differences in culture sneak up to you in such subtle ways you often don't take conscious notices of them. but as they appear every here and there, thought it would be nice and interesting to share.
if you are in Marketing, Management, or have studied culture before, guess that dimension of culture difference (the one about titles) is Power Distance, and unfortunately Singapore is ranked the highest power distance country in the world! it means the degree to which a group values equality in relationships, and a high power distance country means people expect and accept that power is distributed unequally in their society, based on status, age, wealth, education and so on.
and right there in front of our eyes, a living example of how Singapore has a higher power distance than Australia (because if you see everyone as equal, why would you care about his status whether he's a professor, doctor or even toilet cleaner?). haha. we've not only accepted the inequality in relationships, we've also taken it so deep that we must address every teacher Mr. so-and-so (last name) or Doctor Kua for example (is sick.. haha kelsey), so much so that if we don't include their title, it's like a form of disrespect to them (which essentially is just their education status isnt it?).
it isnt disrespect, really. just culture differences. so its fine to call mr lam, boon seng yea? hahaha.
well that was one long sidetrack. so this post has to be continued tmr for the benefits of your eyes. ;)
