school!

oh dear i really shouldn't be here. but oh well neverminds, since im here already just a quick update!

school has finally started for me and it's horrible! after 8 months of break my brains are really rusty. accounting lecture has been a buzz, don't understand most of it because of all the technical terms which they used. micro and quantitative methods 1 is still quite okay because we kinda did that in jc already. and i really duno why i took up psychology! it is such a time consuming subject lah. gotta do lots of reading from sources other than lecture notes because they are useless. like just a few slides of ppt. and that means i gotta get textbooks but i dun want to buy them because its only for 1 sem. and i hate borrowing from libraries! and though that's not my main course of study, it stands like most of my timetable. 3 hours of lectures per week and 2 hours of practical. which means just 1 subject alone took up 5hours of a week! horrible leh. and its not that interesting after all. just thinking of the assignments and essays and exams, i've lost interest already.

went to watch the dark knight on tuesday night with the rest and all i can say is i really dun like action shows! worst show i've ever watched. the joker is creepy and the show is depressing. so long somemore! sorry to all who liked the dark knight. prefer bright and happy shows. have been cooking dinner at my friends' house these 2 days and the food turn out to be quite nice. haha. again no photos because of the lousy plan, but will probably bring delly to school some day to upload all onto facebook when i'm free. okay i have an early lesson tomorrow morning (at 10am, dun say its late because i gotta wake up earlier to like cook water, make breakfast and stuff), better turn in now. byebye!

living alone

okay school has officially reopened today but i've no lessons on mondays so today was a free day for me. but i went to school anyways to print my timetable and connected delly to the school's wireless connection. its time to start tapping legally onto free wireless connection. a piece of very bad news is i cant change my internet plan yet! sighs. because i've paid for my current plan till end of august. so i've gotta live through it till end of august before i can change it. how horrible is that i cant play online cooking games and watch shows online for unlimited hours! =(( yea anyway back to the topic, living alone is horrible stuff!

although i've only been here for like 2 weeks? a little less than 2 weeks, i feel that i've been here for ages, why is time passing so slowly. horribly slowly. cant wait for dec to come so that i can fly back to singapore for a good whole 2 months. =(( living alone is such a hassle. you cant buy food which you want to eat (in case i cannot finish by the due date you see), you have to cook for 1 person which is very hard!, you have no one to eat with and you have no one to talk to! sighs im so going to have an imaginary friend soon. (and worst still i cant go internet frequently!)

did my first laundry in my life today and it is such a waste water activity! sucks lah i hate doing laundry. no wonder customers kept asking me if the clothes could be machine wash back in marco polo. i had been like procrastinating it since saturday and if i still dun do it today i'll have no more undergarments to wear. so, that's it today is the day. luckily madam taught me what to do it before she left. sighs. the days of just-throw-dirty-clothes-into-laudry-basket-and-see-it-clean-fragrance-and-steamed-back-in-my-room days are long gone. spent about 1hour half washing those clothes maually because they cant be machine washed. and i squatted until i see stars around me when i stood up. and ya! if any one of you are suffering from constipation just do your own laundry by squatting, i assure you your problem will be solved immediately because that was what happened to me! solution tried and tested. (shall not elaborate on the details, just 1 thing though i reused the laundry water as flushing water! =D)

and i've not talked to a single person today (except buying stuff) can you believe it! sighs. okay ming tian hui gen hao. hope school would be okay tomorrow. the end of 8months of holidays. which im quite glad, at least it gives me something to do at home here.

oh oh i almost forgot! cooked for the second time today and it is quite ookayy i guess. much better than the first attempt. cooked pasta this time round with super wierd combination of ingredients. cauliflower, lettuce, chicken, and hotdogs. okay i added lettuce because i'm afraid i cant finish, i added cauliflower because i'm afraid it will spoil soon and i added hotdogs and chicken because i feel like eating them. yea. and also because i wana eat some vege lah. the first cooking experience was horrible, which i dun think i'll blog about it anymore. another thing i want to complain is that the stove is very hard to on! it goes like tick tick tick x a million times before it gets ignited and its so scary because sometimes it ticks until i can smell gas. i always got a feeling it'll explode if i dun release it. so thats the very main reason why i dun like to cook. and also the whole place will be very smoky if i cook. second reason why i dun like to cook dinner.

okay that's it byebye.

orientation

hey haven had time to blog these few days and the things to blog about had been like piling up. yea so i got a feeling this post is going to be super long.

host program
right lets start with orientation! hadn't really been looking forward to orientation because i know its not going to be the singapore university kind of orientation. yea so how right i was when i arrive in school to join the host program thing. its so boring, like there's this senior student in uni bringing us in groups of 10 around campus, introducing what is what and all that. the thing is campus isn't very big so i think the time allocated to this program is abit too long. the program aside, there're people from germany, US, malaysia, singapore and some european country cant remember what in my group. no aussies at all. and it was until then that i knew july intake got no aussie students! yea abit sad because i thought i can get to know some locals. (there isn't alot of ang mohs in school too, mostly filled with asian students, either international or local born asians (probably school haven reopen that's why)) anyways it was really horrible because the germany and US students are all on exchange program, so they're like only here for 1 sem. and cant really clique with them because we didn't have a common topic. so it's just the normal intro stuff all over again since j1 orientation in sa, with an additional question of where are you from. ah i dun like that. (and they cant catch my name yu~min. so it always end up with u-min. but its okay lah.)

free bbq lunch
host program was followed by a free bbq lunch for all and i was like wow FREE bbq lunch. haha. was really looking forward to it but again it was a disappointment. you know how singapore's bbq is like, hotdogs, sausages, satay, otah and all the good hot stuff, but the bbq lunch here was only about hotdog buns. and the hotdogs are all burnt. terrible. keep thinking if i'll get cancer after eating that bun. after that wandered around school abit and my friend and i were still contemplating if we should go for the bush dance later in the afternoon because everyone seems to have left by then. somemore all the programs have been quite sucky. we decided to go anyway since we've got nothing to do.

bush dance
yea so luckily we went because the bush dance thing was great! its like an australian dance or rather dances. the court was like freezing cold and very windy when we went so i was shivering from top to bottom. but when the dance started it became quite alright. there's a live band playing countryside music at the start before they showed us different style of whippings. then the dance started. the first dance is something like what we did during odac oec campfire, like you dance and change partners in a big circle. it turns out that quite alot of people turned up for the dance, which make it more fun. and yea the dance was great, quite catchy with rather simple steps. you gotta go like boy girl boy girl then all the girls are kangaroos and all the guys are emules(?). so we gotta hop out into the circle and hop back but the emules' pose was so much worse. duno how to describe, too complicated. the dance went on for quite awhile before they changed it to another, though its still dancing and changing partners in a big circle. its quite fun i think and you get to meet all the people there in just the duration of the dance. and the thing is you dun have to talk too much, like dun have to try squeezing questions and keep the conversation going because its just hi what's your name where are you from and there you go repeating the same questions to another person. but if they're quick in answering or i am quick in asking we get to know about their age, their course, their year of study and all that. that's the max already lah anyway. then when i said i was from singapore i got this person asking me which part. haha suddenly thought of xiuhui because she got the same question being asked when travelling in europe. i totally can feel how she felt then because i was like her thinking in my mind yishun? then i said singapore is a nation, a city state so he asked again like near where so i said around malaysia, indonesia that area. ya quite funny. haha. it was during this dance that i met alot of singaporeans. alot of them are poly graduates, so they're studying year 2.

the next dance was in group of six and i happened to be dancing with this new york guy when the previous dance stopped so was with him throughout the oncoming ones. lucky for him because i am a total dance idiot. cannot remember steps and everything so most of the time he's like leading me. i think the group of 6 dance is most fun and tiring already. after that was followed by a group of 3 dance. then was free bbq dinner again and this time round i knew what to expect, and it turned out to be the same as afternoon, with even more burnt sausages! goodness cancer! all the singaporeans came together after the dance and we went for dinner at night.(forgoing the bbq dinner of course though it was free) there're like 14 at dinner but i think there're more singaporeans who din come with us.

course welcome
second day of orientation was horrible, filled with talks. there's a course welcome session in the morning followed by free lunch. and this time round lunch was great. its pizza and sushi (oh i realised the people here like to eat sushi alot duno why). saved money on food again. =)) the pizza is great though i duno what flavour i'm eating. then there was free ice-cream too. there's a clubs and societies fair going on but apparently the sports one is next thursday. so i've gotta wait till next week before i can join any clubs because i want to join something fun and sporty, if not i'll feel very nua and unfit. after that went to check out my timetable and did some admin stuff and went central to buy some groceries before heading home, deciding to cook my first meal in my life. okay maybe i'll blog about it another day because as you can see my post is getting really long.

winterace
third day of orientation was winterace. something like amazing race around melbourne city. signed up with a group of singaporeans after bush dance. and it was super tiring even though we didn't run or anything. we were still quite enthusiastic at first, took trams and everything (we have a free 2hr metcard provided) but till the end we just walked because we knew we were not going to win. it turns out that melbourne city is quite small, and you won't get lost because its like rectangular, so just turn here and there and you get back to where you came from.

there was this checkpoint where we were all made to eat bread with vegemite which looks very much like nutella. i was like thinking why this checkpoint so easy. but once i tasted the bread i knew why. it tasted nothing like nutella! its like sour and salty combine and i read the jar it said yeast extract. yuck! totally disgusted. got vomit smell. and another checkpoint requires us to do hula hoop and i so cannot hula hoopy! crap. spent like such a long time trying to get just 5 turns. we were like sightseeing near the end, taking photos and everything. the more i walk around melbourne the more i think its like singapore. their yarra river is like our boat quay, and one of my group mate was saying city life is all the same. shopping, movies, clubs and the end. what's with the brochure saying you won't run out of things to do in melbourne. all the crap lah i have nothing to do now that i've gone to most places with mummy and uxin. yea was pretty shagged when we finally returned back to school. there were free pizzas provided again and i ate only a piece, quite sick of pizzas now. on the way back bought a row of sushi for dinner. which i just finished eating. =)

oh ya btw i found someone who lives at the same place as me! haha. these 2 singaporean guys who are sharing an apartment in college square on lygon as well. i kinda liked the location of my house because its on lygon street and there're alot of italian restaurants ahead. so in future i can just da bao back and eat if i'm not cooking. which will be quite frequent considering my first cooking experience. will update tomorrow if there's time. yea so that's about all. byebye!

ps. wah val you sound so happy lah. haha. why are you laughing at my news coloumn? i'm trying to promote some news reading culture in my blog okay. please show some support. and hogwarts is sooo much more magnificent than my school. haha. i miss harry potter's series leh, hope the movie hurry comes out. and ya i really whip up a storm man. literally, it was all smoky and everything. sigh. and ya bala is fine i guess. haha. you're still as amused as before over the messtin. and torchlight too.

and leesi yea i got your email. thanks. i dun really get what you mean by drenched leh. haha. and that cedarian is called pamella, from track.

nat i still haven meet this mysterious debbie tan. haha. and minqi yea i would if i could catch one. haha. madness! running for seagulls.

enrolment day

hey this is horrible. i can only blog for awhile because i have limited internet usage. 1000mb per month which is like damn little! so my session with dear blogger is cut short because i just spent a good whole minute reading odacers' blog. omg i wish i were there at the chalet. it looks fun. and maybe i could bring mahjong too if i went! =(( anyways i've decided to change to another internet plan next month so that i can use more internet. yes i will do that.

went to school today for enrolment day and finished the enrolment details. i was so blur throughout the entire thing today. uni stuff is complicating and confusing. what breadth subjects, core subjects, points system, disciplines and everything else. its just hard to absorb and digest in one hour. but anyways i successfully(?) enrolled myself in i guess. took up psychology as a breadth (something extra, for your own interest, outside your core program/major)

that aside, i met this cedarian today at the briefing and she happened to be from sajc for first three months! and guess what, she knows wanling and is her sec 1-4 classmate, and she knows edmund because they were in the same first 3 months class, and she knows sharon ser because they were classmates in vj. haha. the world is quite small after all.

after that went off and met up with mummy and uxin. ate at this really good thai restaurant and i finally had my sweet and sour fish with rice after all this while. omg it tasted heavenly. no wonder there are so many people in there.

i think i'm slowly getting attuned to the weather here. it has been really wet and windy these few days. raining everyday and the wind is getting from bad to worse. it used to only attack at night but now, hurh every now and then. my nose bled during the first few days here due to the weather of course but now i guess im slowly getting use to it. (the bleeding has stopped!)

visited st kilda beach on sunday and they have this sunday market by the beach/sea and its really cool. they sell handicrafts, handbags, scarfs, accessories and stuff. quite interesting. and the beach is beautiful with the seagulls around. there are many pastry shops there and the pastries looked damn tempting and pretty. cupcake trees, chocolate fountain, apple blueberry pie (which is what i bought quite obviously since i like both apple and blueberry pie), chocolate cakes (the classic), hazelnut choc cake and alot more! name it and get it! (i wish i could upload photos but that would take too much time. probably another day on facebook. (= ) all in all it was a lazy but enjoyable afternoon.

another free day tomorrow and orientation will start on wednesday. mummy and uxin will leave on wednesday too.

sidenote, madam has been cooking quite alot here. haha. crazy, cooked rice with fried chicken, her beloved caulifower and brocoli, pasta, campbell soup, steamed pumpkin, steamed corn (the super fresh kind) and maggi noodles with alot of additional ingredients. and we have been eating alot too since the portions are very big and we dun want to waste the food. omg i think i'll have to control my food intake already, i dun want to scare anyone or scare myself if no one recognise me when i get back to singapore! =) byebye!

ps. thanks for the comments girls! =)) and may you make singapore sound so tropical, HAHA what sunny island. wild berries?

in melbourne

hi i'm in melbourne now, nice and cosy in my apartment! =)) got the internet fixed yesterday morning. left for melbourne in the morning of 15 july and had a transit at perth and it was horrible okay! we had to carry all the luggages (which was like 6 large luggages and 2 hand carry) from the international airport to the domestic airport. though there is a terminal transfer bus but still we had to carry it all the way out and all the way in again. worst still we had to pay for the trolleys at perth domestic airport, so we decided to save that money and carry ourselves in the rain into the airport. and then our flight got delayed again and again and only reached melbourne at local time 1.30am (singapore time 11.30pm).

its pretty cool here, the streets are really clean and there are alot of good food! (shiok i like! =)) there are alot of cafes, restaurants and small eateries and they all open till quite late. went to eat pasta and pizza on the first night, chinese food like la mian, fried rice, guo tie on the second night and today fish and chips and burger and chips. the portions are really really big and most of time we had to share our food. but i can assure you they are really deli! there are alot more food untried and undiscovered, which im going to unravel in future! ha. (i can forsee myself expanding horizontally)

melbourne is really a cosmopolitan city. like everywhere you go you can see clusters and clusters of asians. and i was so fascinated by the scene i saw in the chinese restaurant on the second night here, people of all races in the restaurant are all using chopsticks! haha. though some were not really holding it the right way but its pretty amazing to be able to use it isn't it? and then there was this caucasian speaking standard mandarin in chinese accent at the entrance. cool! (its not like we're in china you see, so im pretty amazed)

and now i know why people have been telling me not to worry about coming to melbourne. its pretty easy to settle in, the transportation system is organised and easy to access, its safe here and globalisation brings many familiar brands and food to me. though shops close by 5pm, its not like new zealand or europe where the city dies after 5, there're still pretty much going on here after hours, people on the streets, on trams, in restaurants and even on bicycles! oh ya its by law that you need to wear a helmet when riding a bike, even if its on the pavement. haha. quite cool, saw a lady wearing suit holding files riding on a short bike with helmet on on the pavement.

but one thing its really cold here, even though its not like korea/europe's winter kind of cold. its funny how we use to equate sunny=hot=sweaty=sticky in singapore. because its sunny in the morning here, but still cold. and night time is even worst. windy and cold without the warmth of sun. so we usually return home after dinner and even so my face still hurts from the wind. the facial foam and moisturizing gel i brought from home don't seem to be working anymore.

okay enough about melbourne. had been going out to buy neccesities and hardware for my house these few days and i guess i'm pretty much done with my house. visited my school yesterday and i like it alot! =)) it has that kind of old old feel, old as in not torn and tattered but historic. and the union house (something like student centre) sells lotsa different kinds of food! from western to indian to halal to chinese whatever you want. and there is even bubble tea! (yays my pearl milk tea!) heh heh. i'm looking forward to school already. went to open a bank acct and gotten a pre paid card too for my handphone. so i guess im pretty much done with all the things i'm supposed to do.

went around exploring melbourne central after that. and explore=shop abit=spend abit=new clothes! heh heh. visited the casino at night for madam (my mum) was so looking forward to it. haha. damn funny. she keep entertaining me and my sister throughout the entire trip. no should be we keep disturbing her. hah. it was the first time i ever stepped into a casino since i turned 18. and i dun know how to play a single thing in there! its like an archade for grown up in my opinion. no big deal okay! humph what's with the age resrtictions. (okay lah i know lah, gambling has a bad influence on kids lah whatever)

and for today we went chinatown and queen's victorian market. my mum got soooo excited in the market for the fruits and vegetables are really fresh in there. even i got excited too. haha. the way they place it makes you forget that there are still millions of people out there suffering from malnutrition and starvation. the supply looks endless and the vegetables are so fresh they look like they are just being removed from the farm. and the result was us buying alot of vegetables, fuji apples, pears and oranges home. haha. so in the name of showing me how to cook, my mum decided to cook tomorrow (secretly wants to try those vegetables dun think i duno).

yea so that pretty much summarised what i've been doing these few days. will be visiting factory outlets store tomorrow with my sis to get somemore long sleeve clothes to wear. and maybe visit somemore tourist attractions until 21st july.

tao's and waraku

hellos! met up with priscilla, jamie and sam (my primary school friends) on saturday and had dinner at tao's restaurant. it's a really good place to dine at if you are really hungry, and i mean really. they only have two pages for their menu, one in english and one in chinese. so basically only 1 page. haha. its a standard 6 course meal for lunch and 8 course meal for dinner. i almosted vomitted the last time we went there to have lunch (due to fullness of course), fortunately dinner was quite okay this time round. still very full though.

this is the starter bacon and cheese gratin with free flow of bread. of course you won't want to overindulge with bread for the first dish only. personally i think this is the best dish out of all. a must eat!

after gratin would be a choice of salad. i chose a fruit salad this time round.

this is the least mushroomy looking mushroom i've ever eaten and the sauce is great!

i've chosen this shark fins melon herbal soup which tasted like chicken soup without shark fins. but it tasted better than jamie's fish soup and pris's mushroom soup though. haha.

and then is the main course. i chose this herbal-crusted baked prawn. please do not reject this dish just because there's a "herbal" attached to it okay. it tasted far from herby. haha. like some cheese bake prawn. but i think jamie's slow-cooked pork ribs are nicer.

this is sorbet and its what? strawberry and pineapple? ice-blended i think. haha cant remember.

wooo~ dessert time! though im already relatively full to my throat but girls always have space for desserts. haha. we all chose this really small choc fondue. deli!

such a cute looking pot of tea! i went for iced summer peach tea and there are really cubes of peaches and flowers inside. best peach tea i've ever tried.

and the waiters are all very very friendly, volunteered to take photos for us every now and then and even gave us another free choc fondue at the end of everything.

haha. we ate so much that we even ate up our teeth.

it was an enjoyable night altogether, catching up, talking about random stuff and all the funny things that happened during our primary school days.

and finally thanks for the photos! i love it very much! cant believe you actually still have our primary school days photos. HAHA. the first photo was priscilla's birthday party at MacDonalds celebrating her 9th birthday! the dream place for birthday parties when we were all young.

and then was today's meetup with the girls. i want to tell you may lee, ferlin lee, wang huishan, audrey kan, renee tay, sharon tan, karen mok, kitty tan, joleen tan and cai ying that i love each and everyone of you very much. you guys filled the whole of my secondary school life memories and life would be so much more boring and mundane without your laughters and voices around me. i will miss all of you dearly and i will miss and miss our crazy outings and crazy chop chilli chop or whatever silly games we've ever played. the photo album is one of the best gift i've ever received and you duno how touched i was when i saw it. i promise i will only read those letters on the plane though im like dying to know what's in there now.

the album which brought back tons of memories.

i know this is abit extra but other than thank you i duno what else to say!
thanks girls! i'll miss all of you! and dun forget our lao beijing dim sum buffet date immediately after i come back! =))

preparing for melbourne

hey, studying overseas may sound really exciting but the preperation work you have to do before going is really crazy. people have been asking me about how i'm feeling and everything, but you know what, i really duno how to answer them. i know the kind of standard answers people are waiting for, "hey i'm feeling so excited and im looking forward to it! cant wait to reach there." but i just cant bring myself to say that.

its not that im not looking forward to it, but its just very frustrating to know that my student visa has not yet been approved and the seats are so full i duno what to do if i cannot catch my plane on the 15 july due to visa delays.

and then you will start thinking about what other important paper work you have to do before leaving Singapore, what you have to prepare here, what you have to bring over and these and that. sometimes they just pop out out of nowhere. like during seoul garden dinner i suddenly thought about the australia plug and told clarissa about it. haha. i was so amused to find that clarissa is also facing the same problem as me! the duno how to answer people's quesiton part and always thinking if we haven done something important here. i feel so much better to know that im not alone in all these crap. ha.

but i no longer have to worry so much now! heehee. i've gotten my student visa! yays! im so happy to see that my mum's and sister's tourist visa have been approved too. so now i'm pretty much left with packing and planning my days after i reach there. nice. that's a heavy load off my mind.

will be shopping for some basic pots and pans with my mum tomorrow to bring over. and i'll be stocking up on contact lens and contact lens solution, not use to other brands and heard that the prices of eye care products there are like day light robbery. well i've start to appreciate singapore more now. haha. oh no wonder their wages are higher as well.

okay i'm done complaining. byebye!

hellos

haha. decided to reopen my blog. same url same template and everything. but im not sure if i will update regularly though. shit too long never come here forgot everything about blogging, dun even know how to edit my profile! horrible. nevermind. i shall leave it as it is first. heehee. byebye!
